Chipichape Mall in Cali: Cinema, Shops and How to Get There

Chipichape is a shopping mall in northern Cali, at Calle 38N #6N-45. It opened in 1995 on the site of the old Ferrocarril del Pacífico railway workshops and today has shops, restaurants and a Cine Colombia multiplex. You can get there by car, taxi or MIO bus. The official website lists opening hours of 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Status after the earthquake (checked on 25 September 2026): after the earthquake of 10 August 2026, Chipichape closed for 12 days to inspect its buildings and repair masonry; according to the mall, it suffered no structural damage. It reopened on 22 August and is now operating normally.

About Chipichape: history and architecture

Chipichape opened on 17 November 1995 on the land where the Ferrocarril del Pacífico workshops used to operate. Those workshops were built in 1936 and, according to research by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, became some of the most important in South America.

The workshops were designed in brick with timber trusses. The Colombian engineers who defended the design argued that in Cali’s heat a metal building would suffocate the people working inside, and that metal was very expensive at the time. The mall keeps buildings and the industrial look of those workshops.

Cinema at Chipichape: screens, showtimes and tickets

Cine Colombia runs the Chipichape multiplex. According to cinema listings, its entrance is on Avenida 6A Norte #37N-25, a different address from the mall’s main one. It has an IMAX screen, which the mall presented as Cine Colombia’s first in Cali. Each film shows its format: 2D, 3D or IMAX.

Showtimes change with the weekly schedule, so this guide does not list them. To see them and buy tickets, go to cinecolombia.com and choose Chipichape, or ask at the multiplex box office.

Shops, brands and banking services

The official directory groups stores by category: women’s, men’s, children’s and unisex fashion, footwear, technology, sports, toys, books and music, health and beauty, and supermarket and home. Brands listed include GEF, Pepe Jeans London and Le Coq Sportif.

For errands, the mall has banks and ATMs, such as Banco AV Villas, as well as telecom stores and a currency exchange, Cambios Cash. A 2022 article in Punto Comercial counted more than 400 stores; the official website does not currently publish a total.

Restaurants and food court

Chipichape has a food court and restaurants with their own premises. The official directory separates restaurants from cafés and bars, and includes brands such as Sr Wok and Cheers Pizza. Each store’s page in that directory is the most direct source for its menu and opening hours.

For kids: Happy City

The Happy City children’s amusement park is in units 256 to 259 of the mall. It opens Monday to Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fridays from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (hours published by Happy City, checked on 25 September 2026).

The official website lists general opening hours of 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It does not break them down by store, so each shop, restaurant, bank and the cinema keep their own hours. Chipichape has paid parking, and its website links to a way to pay for it. The mall does not publish its rates, so this guide does not include them. The main entrances are on Calle 38N and Avenida 6A Norte.

How to get to Chipichape by public transport and by car

Chipichape is on Avenida 6N, in northern Cali. By MIO bus, the Moovit app places the nearest stop at Avenida 6A and Calle 35N, about a six-minute walk away. Routes depend on where you start, so check the Metrocali journey planner or a route app before you go.

By car or taxi, these are road distances from the mall, estimated with the OSRM router without traffic:

• Plaza de Caycedo, downtown: about 4.3 km and 10 minutes.
• Único Outlet, also in the north: about 5.4 km and 12 minutes.
• Unicentro Cali and Jardín Plaza, in the south: 13.5 to 14.3 km, and 24 to 27 minutes.
• Alfonso Bonilla Aragón Airport, in Palmira: about 21 km and 29 minutes.

These times increase at rush hour.

Why is it called Chipichape?

There are several explanations and none is confirmed. One links the name to the sound of the locomotives and the ironworks in the workshops. Another says it was the name of the estate that occupied the land. A third attributes it to a local pronunciation of the English “ship shape”, a disputed version.
