How to get to La Barra
- Cali – Buenaventura: about two and a half hours by road, by bus or car.
- Buenaventura – Juanchaco: a 45-minute to one-hour boat ride from the tourist pier, for about $70,000 COP per person each way (reference fare checked at the pier in September 2026). The last boat of the day leaves around 4:00 p.m. The crossing passes the Paso del Tigre, the roughest stretch of sea.
- Juanchaco – La Barra: visitors describe three options: motorbike or motocarro on the rural road (with rough stretches), motorbike along the beach at low tide, or boat at high tide. The drivers and boatmen belong to the area’s community councils; agree on the price before setting off.

What to do in La Barra
- Beach and rest: the main plan. La Barra is the choice on the corridor for anyone seeking to disconnect, with no big hotels or party scene.
- Natural pools, mangroves, and estuaries: National Natural Parks lists tours of mangroves, estuaries, and natural pools in Ladrilleros and La Barra among the area’s activities, with community guides and environmental interpreters.
- Whale watching: the tourist season in Bahía Málaga runs from July to October (whales are present from June to November, most densely in September and October). Where to stay
La Barra mostly has cabins and family-run guesthouses, many run by local people. There’s more choice toward Ladrilleros: for example, Nativo Home (RNT 212294) is in the area between Ladrilleros and La Barra.
